In 2012 when Dota 2 started to gain popularity worldwide, and the professional stage was relatively small, there is information about the new talent that was destined to become a world-class player. Sixteen-year-old guy, born in Uzbekistan and at an early age moved with his family to Canada, became a sparring partner of several strongest players. Said train with him the Swede Gustav «s4» Magnusson and Ukrainian Danil «Dendi» Ishutin is the strongest in their positions players in the world, who will meet each other in the finals of the world championship (The International) in 2013.

However, Arthur Babaev took the time to be in the same professional teams — study was in the first place, and the question was only who will be the first to sign a contract with him, when Arthur finishes school. Life took a different turn: in February 2014, the team Evil Geniuses, who was in the stage of restructuring, invited three players of the Swede’s Ludwig «zai» Wahlberg, American Peter «ppd» Gale and Arthur, by then already known to the General public under the name «Arteezy». That summer Arthur helped the team take third place at The International 4, which was the best result in team history. Because of the complicated nature in 2015 and 2016 Arthur left Evil Geniuses, but his team did not achieve at the world Championships success, while EG has won in 2015 and ranked third in 2016.

However, with age, Arthur has changed, EG for the third time took the prodigal son, and two months later a North American team will be one of the favorites of The International 7. In Moscow Arthur arrived with the team at the tournament Epicenter, where EG took second place, earning $ 100 000.

— My parents left Uzbekistan when I was two, then I still really didn’t know how to talk. When parents considered the options for the move, they stopped into Canada, because I thought it would be better for my future. It seems to me that twenty years ago, there was a significant difference in where to grow in North America or Uzbekistan. At some point, the question for parents was only a certain part of Canada to move to East or West. Vancouver was the best option: then the family had not much money, and this town seemed to be the most prestigious.

— What language do you speak to each other?
— When we moved to Canada, I spoke Russian. Then I started to learn English, and Russian, on the contrary, began to forget — I could not confidently switch from one language to another. I pretty well knew Russian, and now understand what people are saying around me. At home the parents speak to me in Russian, and I answer them in English. I believe that from the outside it looks pretty weird.

When I was seven, I went to a Russian school, and after class there was already the usual. It wasn’t easy to me this study did not like, and I often ached for this reason. However, when I was about twelve years old, I said I don’t want to go to Russian school, — from that moment I began to gradually forget the language. Now I can also communicate in Russian, for example, ask to do something, but to describe their emotions in Russian.

— And do you think in what language?
In English.

— What do your parents think about this?
They are half-Armenian, half Russian. I’m sure they would be happy if I spoke with them in Russian, but they are unlikely to be too disappointed by this fact.

— When did you know you wanted to devote himself to Dota 2?
Somewhere in 2012. Then I saw a video where Dendi plays mid lane. At some point, something clicked in my head, and I realized that that’s what I want to do. I remember I said aloud: «I want to be the best mid player».

I played this a lot, but not thought about how I do it. After that video I started to view the records of their matches and analyze where I made a mistake. And began to see a huge number of matches, the Chinese teams for example, I watched literally every match Tong Fu. Then I started to take Dota 2 is not just as a game but as a competitive discipline.

— How did your parents react to your passion?
— I always played. I spent most of my time at home, but the parents treated it normally and didn’t follow most of what I play. When I was 15 years old and I have watched that video, I had to make a difficult decision. I was fond of many games, but in order to be the best, I had to completely focus on Dota 2. I decided to leave the rest of the game and dedicate yourself to just one.

At some point I had to start waking up at five in the morning to exercise. My father, who very early went to work, asked why I was up so early and what I do. I tried to explain to him, but he did not attach much importance. But when mom woke up and saw me, then started screaming — hardly in the world there are parents who will be happy to see your child sitting in front of a computer in the early morning. In any case, I tried to play as much as time as possible.

And how did you get on the professional stage?
— I pretty much played in various North American tournaments, and was active in the local popular forum. I was arrogant and cocky, and at some point, I noticed Jacky «EternaLEnVy» Mao — we often played against each other. He asked me if I wanted to play on his team. In fact, he didn’t know how old I am, and, hearing the answer, he promised that he would return with an offer in the summer. For a couple summer months, we won several small tournaments, but then I had to go back to school, so we parted ways.

— But in November he invited you to participate in MLG Columbus.
Oh, and we won, along the way defeating all the strongest opponents. I think that a professional career for me began then.

— However, ahead of you waiting for more six months at school.
— I don’t remember exactly, but somehow I managed to learn much less than they were entitled to. The canadian education system as follows: in the twelfth grade lessons are broken down into two days, usually every day you have four ninety-minute block. I was only four blocks instead of eight. Because of this I have had time for training, participation in tournaments, and I joined Evil Geniuses.

— What have you sacrificed in school, to get into one of the strongest teams in the world?
— I had really close friends. I often lack the ability to just spend time with them, to go to some party. I think I’ve never been socially active as a child. Parents told me that I should spend more time on the street, but when I decided to dedicate themselves to the game, almost stopped just to get out of the house. Although they continued to see me off on Fridays to play basketball. However, in spite of everything, I managed to keep friendly relations with many: I’m still Dating someone, and the guys I support and understand.

If we talk about the victims, I have sacrificed my social life. I think that somewhere in the twelfth grade, I broke up with my girlfriend. I was pretty selfish and never spent with her as much time as she deserved. But, on the other hand, I don’t want to spend time with her, that is because no one wanted to be the best. It is, of course, was upset with my choice, but I did what had to be done.

— Was there a moment when you realized that was the best?
— I think that just in 2013, when we won first place at MLG Columbus. I beat Dendi, Mushi (Chai «Mushi» E Fun, Team Orange took third place at the world championship 2013. — Approx. ed.) and other top players of the middle line. Even before this, I would watch replays of their matches and literally laughed. I was cocky and because of their mentality already believed that I am the strongest, even without a victory in Columbus. When I proved it to myself, then race for those who demand the best, for me, has lost interest.

— How did your parents react to the fact that you’re in the middle of the school year flew to another country to play Dota 2?
— Actually, I’m even out of school did not take time off, it just flew off. Parents said don’t mind, as the dates of the tournament had for the weekend. Then mom didn’t think that this was gonna happen, she wanted me to finished high school, enrolled at the University of British Columbia, received the diploma of the doctor or doing some research. However, after the victory at MLG I’m completely entrenched in the belief in what I want to do. I think that my mom is also gradually beginning to understand me and my plans.

Then she didn’t think I would often be absent due to participation in tournaments. However, my career went up, and I had to take tests and exams in advance. Mom told me that I can fly to the tournaments, yet do very well. I continued to get good grades and combined studies with exercise. However, at some point it became impossible to combine these two things in the summer, I was forced to fly for three weeks. I hardly passed the final exams and the English exam is passed the autumn, as physically was not able to attend. In the autumn, after The International 4, I went back to school and shut down all the «tails». As for my mom, she was afraid that I did not finish school.

— The International 4 held in Seattle, which is literally a few hundred kilometers from Vancouver. Did your parents come to cheer you on?
— Yes, they were in the tournament and the next world Championships came. But the tournament was to them something entirely new. Then they never followed Dota 2, they watched only the matches involving my team and tried to understand what was happening. When they arrived in Seattle, it became for them a revelation. They saw thousands of fans. I decided to show my mom the arena, but before entering I started to run, people asked to be photographed. I think in that moment they realized that the game makes me happy. I believe that everyone wants parents to make their children happy.

My father is obsessed with Dota 2. He watches every single match when he has time. Sometimes, I get up at six in the morning, go to the kitchen to make coffee, and see how the father looks at the matches of some teams from the CIS. However, he asked me why one or the other team took a decision. Sometimes he’s teasing me for my mistakes, sometimes asked why we have chosen some strategy. He tries to support me. Sometimes it’s a little annoying, but still funny.

— Do you still live with your parents? I understand that in career you earned over a million dollars.
— I bought a house her parents, now they have it just equip. Since I am a home appear quite rare, decided that it is better to buy a house for them.

— Ever thought about a career outside of Dota 2?
— I try not to think ahead. Don’t know how many more years will I plan to stay until until I think he began to play badly. It is possible that in ten years I’ll be in shape. It is possible that Dota 2 will grow even more or, on the contrary, it will be forgotten. If I had a choice of what to do, I would have waited until the last minute with the departure from the professional scene, and then tried to find work related to Dota 2. Perhaps this would be a coach — I think I have too much experience to have gone in vain.
