Ukraine’s population could shrink by almost 12 million people in the next 30 years. About it reports RIA Novosti Ukraine, citing data from the Institute of demography and social studies of the National Academy of Sciences (NASU).

It is noted that in the early 90-ies in Ukraine there were more than 50 million people, and today, according to official statistics from 1 March 2017, the population of Ukraine amounted to 42,371 million.

The Institute considered several scenarios. Thus, in accordance with the «high variant» of the population by 2050 will not change in the «average scenario» — will be 37 million people, and on «low» — will be reduced to 30 million. The researchers note that the first option is extremely improbable.

As stressed by the leading scientific researcher NASU Lydia Tkachenko, the downward trend in the population to overcome the almost impossible.

«It turns out that the mechanism of depopulation is already running for a long time, have already formed a very small generation of young people», — said Tkachenko.
