Obolonskiy district court of Kiev on Friday continued a preliminary hearing on the criminal case against former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych on charges of treason, the correspondent of RIA Novosti.

Obolonskiy district court of Kyiv has held three pre-trial sessions in the case of Yanukovych. The court considered a number of petitions of protection, in particular to ensure his participation in the trial via videoconference. The court gave Yanukovych the software’s ability to participate in the trial via videoconference. However, the ex-President has not been in contact with the court. The reason was that the Kiev court refused to send in the Rostov regional court a formal request in the framework of international legal assistance on the organization of videoconference with participation of Yanukovych.

«The trial was declared continue,» said presiding judge Vyacheslav Devyatko.

After a coup in Ukraine in February 2014, the new authorities want to prosecute Yanukovych and many former bureaucrats. In relation to the former Ukrainian authorities are being investigated criminal cases, in particular, about the theft of public funds, financial frauds, land-grabbing and abuse of office. Many former leaders of the country because of the threat of political persecution were forced to go abroad.
