Approved a plan for development of a ferry communication with Kaliningrad oblast

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev approved a plan of ferry communication with Kaliningrad region, providing including the construction of three cargo and passenger ferries, which will operate on the line Baltiysk — Ust-Luga, a document posted on the website of the Cabinet of Ministers on Saturday.

Now the cargo in the Kaliningrad oblast are delivered mainly by rail. An alternative route of delivery of goods is the ferry line Ust-Luga – Baltiysk, which is operated by the two legacy rail ferry.

«Signed by order approved the transfer plan to ensure accessibility of the Kaliningrad region, aimed at the development of ferry connections. Plan, in particular, provides for the construction of three rail ferries for operation on railway ferry line Ust-Luga – Baltiysk. The construction of such ferries in addition to will allow to provide transportation of line Ust-Luga – Baltiysk total volume of goods for domestic consumption of the Kaliningrad region», — stated in the message.

The construction of ferries in 2017-2020 planned due to budgetary and borrowed funds. It is planned that implementation of the plan will allow you to refocus on the ferry line Ust-Luga – Baltiysk large part of the cargo to Kaliningrad region and from it, the following currently the railway transport on the territories of Belarus and Lithuania.
