17 June 1970 — 47 years ago, something happened which changed the history of photography. American optics scientist Edwin Land patented the world’s first fully automated camera Polaroid SX-70. Photography became available to everyone.

In addition, some filters used in the application, clearly mimic «Polaroids» color.

Despite the serious crisis, camera instant print to defend their right to exist in the digital era. We asked the photographers, why they still shoot on Polaroid and what he is inferior to digital photography.

History

In Russia the Polaroid camera came in the 1990-ies and immediately began to enjoy great demand. The camera was in many families, and cartridges for them were sold in usual stalls. The country has opened its own production — Polaroid Supercolor 635 CL Polaroid 636 Closeup and produced at the Moscow plant «Svetozor» by an American license.

The beginning of «zero» Polaroid ousted from the market of compact digital cameras. The tapes, without which the camera was not working, to get became harder and then impossible.

A few years ago, instant photography in Russia began to experience a second wave of popularity.

«The appearance on the market Polaroid has provided a great leap in Amateur photography. First, it was the camera with manual settings, to work with them it was necessary to have at least minimal knowledge of what the shutter speed and aperture. Secondly, the process has accelerated — time in developing and printing film is no longer required. The first fully automatic camera Polaroid — SX-70 — began producing in 1972.

If we consider Polaroid from the point of view of art, it is also a certain breakthrough. This camera was a single thumbprint. This piece product. Fully art. Andy Warhol and Robert Mapplethorpe took pictures on a Polaroid. Many professional photographers of the time, especially the Studio that the picture was done on Polaroid, to understand whether the delivered light in the Studio. And someone after, it was recognized that these technical staff had been among the best.

To say that Polaroid disappeared somewhere, not quite true. In our understanding the same Fujifilm Instax appeared only recently, although in Japan they are sold for a very long time. That is, in a global sense this type of photography will not disappear.

People love the artifacts. In the modern digital age they don’t have enough letters written by hand, something that would leave tangible evidence of the moment. That is why we still use the Polaroid».

«Photography is a way of life. Therefore, the threads are: «I sing what I see». Daily I use a different technique. Love the compact camera, digital and film. Love the Polaroid and the old generation and the new. And a camera phone, though she could hardly breathe, too. The number is the speed. Film is a process. Polaroid is the finished print. That’s about when going to shoot. The camera is a tool. Do the cult of this tool — the task of marketers. It’s not the camera, not in her price, not her skills. It all depends on the context of the photo, the content under is a chosen method of expression.

Digital and film photography I print rarely, because lazy, and it’s expensive too. When I shoot Polaroid, then go through all the stages of the shooting I saw was otkadrirovat, pressed the shutter and got the photo. It can be touched, to be pasted in an album, give. So with these prints do. Another point about Polaroids is color. Cold prints are shown with a blue tint. Warm when Sunny, the Polaroid gives you a more natural color, without the blue. In the instructions to the tapes there is a precise definition of «heat» and «cold.» Not tried it, but I know that there dufrane cartridges — black-yellow, black-red, black-pink colour. Such is the scope for creativity, if you want to say something with color.

I like to shoot on Polaroid intimate, personal moments of my life. When light passes through the leaves outside my window and falls on the table or on the floor, and in this light there is something important to me, is a reason to take a picture on Polaroid. On the color it turns out tender as I wanted. When you leave town on a journey — this is also an excuse to take on the Polaroid, then these pictures are easy to fold in memories. They may somewhere on your computer, they are near — hang on the fridge. On the last day of the birth I was given a modern Polaroid, for him, the tapes are cheaper, so I use them almost every day. And using these photographs’m keeping my diary in a notebook glued to a card and record, as it should be, «dear diary, today it was.»

«I have worked with Polaroid materials, and other materials for instant photography, for over 15 years. Of course, in this action there is something magical: the image on the hard copy appears a few minutes later, after having made the frame.

Polaroid materials is unique in many ways. For example, they allow some materials to get a positive image and a negative for later printing. Or give the possibility of alternative use: the emulsion transfer and image, very interesting color on the shared materials and so on.

I often use unconventional technique. For example, Polaroid emulsion lift. The emulsion from the image otmazyvatsya and transferred to another surface, usually watercolor paper, on the principle of a decal. You can wrap the image with several cards on one surface – it turns collage.

There is another technique of Polaroid image transfer. After shooting Polaroid share the negative part is rolled up tightly to another surface. As a result, you get images resembling watercolor paintings.

On some Polaroid integral materials, it is possible to slightly move the emulsion for some time after the shooting, then it will be an interesting scenic effect.

Well, in connection with the relative high cost of materials in recent time, virtually eliminates the possibility of accidental personnel. In some ways this leads to a loss of naturalness of the image, but, on the other hand, almost every frame is the result of the work of the author. It is felt in almost every picture.»
