The Iraqi military entrenched 100 metres from the main mosque in Mosul al-Nouri, where in 2014 the only time publicly made the leader of the group ISIS (banned in Russia), Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, told RIA Novosti military source.

The mosque is located in the old town in the West of Mosul, in the ongoing decisive battle. In July 2014, al-Baghdadi said in the mosque speech in which he proclaimed the creation of an international «Caliphate» and declared himself its head.

The source did not disclose details, but earlier the army said that moving to the mosque, and anti-terror units are in the 200-300 meters from the stronghold of ISIS.

The Iraqi operation in Mosul continues with the support of the coalition led by the United States from October 2016.
