The destruction of the mosque an-Nuri in Mosul — cultural and human tragedy, says UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova.

«The destruction of the mosque an-Nuri and the minaret of al-Hadba — cultural and human tragedy. We need to protect cultural heritage in order to protect people,» Bokova wrote in his official account on micro-blogging network Twitter.

On Wednesday, the Iraqi military said that the militants* blew up the main mosque of Mosul al-Nouri and minaret. According to the commander of the operation to liberate the province of Nineveh, «the mosque of al-Nouri and minaret al-Hadba militants detonated when Iraqi forces advanced into the heart of the Old town, reaching convincing victories over the ISIS gangs*». The Iraqi army posted on his Facebook account a photograph of the destroyed mosque.

Later, Agence France-Presse reported that the terrorist group «Islamic state»* accused in the destruction of mosques of the United States. The representative of the international coalition led by the United States in response, the prosecution stated that it did not carry out the bombing near the mosque of al-Nouri in the Iraqi city of Mosul.

The mosque is located in the old town in the West of Mosul, in the ongoing decisive battle.
