People’s artist of Russia Alexander Kalyagin has told RIA Novosti that he considers incorrect the detention of former Director of the theater «Gogol-center» Alexei Malopolska.

Previously Presnensky court of Moscow arrested Malopolska in the case of fraud in an organized group, he faces up to 10 years imprisonment.

«Before the Presnensky court had to decide the measure of restraint for our colleagues, former Director of the «Gogol-center» A.V. Malopolska, I went to court with a letter in which he asked of one thing: the period of investigation, is yet unknown, «guilty – not guilty», etc., do not put a person behind bars. And was confident that the court will hear me,» said Kalyagin.

He stressed that «Malopolska not being charged with murder, not terrorism, not even in malicious hooliganism.»

«He is accused that he did not spend state money. Purely economic misconduct. And to it applied an extreme measure, was taken into custody as a notorious criminal. Why, do you want me to ask? He run away? Put on his bracelet. Because there is such a possibility. But instead, put on prison gruel – at our expense, by the way! and even not guilty, not convicted will be kept behind bars. All that is wrong,» concluded Kalyagin.

In may at the Metropolitan theater «Gogol-center» and the home of its artistic Director Kirill Serebrennikov were searched in the case of embezzlement of state funds at a nonprofit organization, «the Seventh Studio», based Serebrennikov. Suspects in the case, in addition to Malopolska, are accountant Nina Masliaev and ex-CEO of the company Yuri Itin.

As follows from the court’s decision, the Ministry of culture of the Russian Federation has allocated about 70 million roubles on carrying out of performances and tours. The money was transferred in ANO, «the Seventh Studio». The defendants, to the materials, decided to steal some of these funds. Itin, Malopolski and Masliaev prepared financial documents for the organization of the play «a Midsummer night’s Dream», but in reality the cost was not, the judge announced the details of the investigation. Thus, the defendants according to the investigation, stole more than 2 million rubles.
