The first batch of humanitarian assistance – about 20 tons – for the people of Syria, gathered representatives of various religious confessions of Russia delivered to Syria, said on Friday the communication service of the Department for external Church relations (DECR) of the Moscow Patriarchate.

The collection of humanitarian aid was conducted in the framework of the working group of the Council for cooperation with religious associations under the Russian President.

«The volume of cargo amounted to about 20 tons, it included food and medical Essentials. On the afternoon of 22 June, the aid was loaded on Board of the Ministry of defence of the Russian Federation, which is late in the evening of the same day arrived at the airport Hamim. 23 and 24 June, food packages will be distributed by the Russian center for conciliation of the warring parties in Syria among the population of Lattakia and Aleppo, and medicines are delivered to hospitals in these cities,» — said in the message.

As explained in the Department, the funds for this assistance were collected, each represented in the working group of Christian and Muslim communities of Russia. Then they were carried out a coordinated procurement of goods.

«The basis of the collected aid was a contribution from his Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Kirill,» — said the ROC. In may of this year the Patriarch blessed to guide on this means that Moscow parishes planned to spend for purchase of flowers as a gift to him on his namesday.

«The Russian Orthodox Church is the main curator of the project, to unite for a common cause the largest religious community in Russia. To discuss future plans for the development of the aforesaid activities and determine its top priorities, the working group will also hold consultation with representatives of the religious communities of Syria in a round table format, which will be held in Beirut, 23 June», — added in the DECR.
