Oldest women’s Greek Orthodox monastery, has launched a campaign to raise funds after a fire destroyed part of the buildings.

The tragedy took place on 15 June, when the monastery of the Nativity of the blessed virgin Mary (Nativity of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Monastery) in the city of Saxonburg (Pennsylvania) was struck by lightning. As stated on the website of the monastery, the blow fell on residential areas.

A fundraiser in aid of the monastery announced on the portal GoFundMe.com.

The final damage is still unknown. However, it is specified that the entire building suffered damage from fire, smoke and water that quenched the fire 25 fire brigades.

It is noted that the fire spread so quickly that the nuns had to endure only the sacred objects from the Church, leaving all personal belongings. Since residential housing to be impossible now, sisters before the repair will have to live in an RV, lease or acquisition of which their insurance does not cover.

The monastery of the Nativity of the blessed virgin in Saxonburg was founded in 1989.
