Russia is not a supporter of the arms race, but a possible US withdrawal from the Treaty on the elimination of intermediate and shorter-range missiles (INF Treaty) may coerce to it, said RIA Novosti on Sunday, the Chairman of the Duma Committee on defence Yury Shvydkin.

On Saturday, Politico, citing a number of congressmen said that the administration estimates received from Congress a proposal for the country’s withdrawal from the INF Treaty.

«Of course, we are not supporters of the arms race, of course, but it can coerce (to),» — said Yuri Svitkin asked by RIA Novosti whether the US withdrawal from the INF Treaty to lead to a new arms race.

«In any case, we won’t see as broken, as not respected (contracts), as equipped with offensive weapons… We’re not a bystander in this issue, will also take appropriate measures,» — said the MP.

The MP said that the implementation of such irresponsible ideas expressed policy of the United States, may lead to the escalation of the armed component. «The discussion itself suggests that in the minds of some (American) politicians are the thoughts that irresponsible, otherwise they would not have called. Why? Because they can lead, if the implementation of them will, eventually, directly to the escalation of tensions, the escalation of the armed component, and this can lead to unpredictable consequences,» evaluated this possible solution MP.

Svitkin said that Russia unlike the United States follows the agreement on the INF Treaty. «Russia today, it should be noted, fully complies with all contractual obligations. However, the United States constantly violate the Treaty, in particular, place certain weapons in Eastern Europe near our borders. In particular, in Romania and Poland missile defense system (NMD) is located (USA)», — explained the situation to the Deputy.

The INF Treaty prohibits parties from possessing ballistic missiles, land-based and cruise missiles with a range of from 500 up to 5,5 thousand km of Russia and the United States periodically put forward mutual accusations of violating INF Treaty, signed in 1987.

The Russian foreign Ministry said earlier that Moscow is seriously concerned about the use of baseless data for the Agreement as a pretext for a campaign about possible retaliatory measures against Russia. The Russian foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the Russian leadership has repeatedly confirmed its adherence to the obligations under the INF Treaty and «any wrongdoing on our part.» He noted that «the United States claim otherwise, but provide no specific information that could be checked in order to clarify the situation.» The Minister of foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation also stressed that Moscow «has very serious questions to US about some «liberties» with the implementation of the Treaty by the Americans themselves.
