Over three quarters of Russians (78%) approve of the idea of introducing criminal penalties for drug use, showed the survey conducted by the Russian center for public opinion studies (VTSIOM) in the eve of the international day against drug abuse.

«In the fight against drug addiction, the Russians even allow such a measure as the introduction of criminal penalties for drug use: «for» voted more than three quarters of respondents (78%)», — stated in the materials of the survey, which was available to RIA Novosti.

Sociologists note that the proportion supporting such a measure in all socio-demographic groups exceeds 70%, including among those who are familiar with people who use drugs. Exceptions were only the inhabitants of Moscow and Saint-Petersburg: 60% of them consider such a measure possible.

Practice leader of information policy and communication technologies VTSIOM Kirill Rodin noted that in society there is a growing request to the state for the formation of a set of specific measures to combat drug abuse and its prevention, and this is a stable trend for more than 10 years. According to him, a growing concern first and foremost is that most Russians said about the growing trend in drug use.

«It is not surprising that in this situation a plant tightening measures until the introduction of criminal liability for drug use, and any attempt to instigate discussion on the legalization of soft drugs meet unanimous negative reaction of the population», — said the expert, commenting on the survey results.

A nationwide survey «polls-Sputnik» was held on 20-21 June 2017 among 1.2 thousand respondents aged from 18 years. Survey method — telephone interviews, the statistical error does not exceed 3.5%.
