Biologists from MIPT and University of Bonn found that the fragments of the cardiac tissue of different origin can be joined with each other and forced to fight in unison that allows you to create a universal «patch» for the heart, according to a paper published in the journal Biomaterials Science.

«Now everything is just suited to grow patches of heart. So the question is this: do I need to stretch and create daneva-engineering designs that can be inserted in the heart, if they are not with him to unite in a single excitable tissue? We have shown that it can be formed. Even if we have different cells, at different stages of development or even from different animals. Although, of course, the animals were neighboring species — rat and mouse, but it’s like a monkey and man», — says Konstantin Agladze, Professor of MIPT, whose word brings the press service of the University.

The heart of man and animals is a unique organ whose cells can simultaneously spontaneously generate electrical impulses and contract, not requiring a constant flow of «commands» from the brain or spinal cord. The current pulses produce the so-called «cage drivers», and cardiomyocytes, muscular cells, use them to play cuts and relaxation at the right moments in time.

Most heart cells are connected to each other, a special protein «wires», so-called annular contacts, which help them to synchronize their work and to properly pump blood through the Atria and ventricles. Violations in the work of «cage drivers», their death or injury of these contacts, as a rule, lead to the development of heart failure and other serious health problems.

For this reason, as told by Agladze, heart today is transplanted only as a whole – scientists can not yet, for example, replace dead areas of the heart muscle that died as a result of myocardial infarction using stem cell cultures or cultured fragments of cardiac tissue.

Russian scientists and their German colleagues found that such operations can in principle be carried out, creating a kind of analogue hearts of the offspring of Victor Frankenstein from the novel by Mary Shelley using the pieces of cardiac tissue for two different species of rodents.

These pieces of the heart, how to tell the researchers they are grown in a special environment and capacity that contributed to the merging of cultures of heterogeneous cells. It was similar to a kind of dumbbell, half of which were grown cells of rats and mice, and through its «handle» they could contact each other at the electrical level.

Zaseeva these half cells of newborn and adult rats, the scientists observed their growth and interaction with each other, adding to the capacity of a special dye that shines when cells are received or generated electrical signal, and transmitted it to the neighboring muscle fibers.

As shown by these experiments, individual cell cultures were quite able to communicate with each other even when they belonged to different animals or even members of different species of rodents. In the latter case, according to the researchers, the electrical signal spread is not as fast as between the pieces of cardiac tissue of the same species of animals, but he had passed on.

All this indicates that the «patches» of cardiac tissue really can be used to combat the effects of ischemia, heart attacks, and other disruptions of the heart. On the other hand, as emphasized by Agladze and his colleagues, such experiments can not be carried out yet on humans, as scientists recorded an unusual signal attenuation at some frequencies in the transition from «patch» to the rest of the heart muscle and ago, which can increase the risk of arrhythmia and threaten the patient’s life.
