MSU scientists found that a component of many creams from sunburn, avobenzone in contact with chlorinated water can break down into toxic elements, the press service of the University.

«Chemists have found that the water component of sunscreen is destroyed with the formation of two dozen of organic compounds belonging to the classes of aromatic acids and aldehydes, phenols and acetophenones. The most toxic products were phenols and chlorinated acetophenones. The latter, in particular chloracetophenone are part of the tear mixes that the police use to disperse protests,» — stated in the message of the University.

If the pool is to produce attractive blue color was added copper salts, in contact with such water, avobenzone can form bromoform – a substance that causes disorders of the liver and kidneys, as well as disorders of the nervous system.

Scientists say that by itself, avobenzone not dangerous. Substance absorbs harmful to human skin to ultraviolet radiation due to the peculiarities of its structure.

«Avobenzone absorbs ultraviolet radiation and converts it into different wavelengths which do not harm the skin (in other words, it converts light energy to heat energy)», — stated in the message.
