Russia for two weeks in March 2014 withdrew assets worth 115 billion dollars from the Federal reserve Bank (FRB) of new York, Reuters reported, citing unnamed representatives of the Ministry of Finance and the fed.

Russia withdrew its assets from the new York fed in March 2014 after the imposition of U.S. sanctions in connection with accession of the Crimea to Russia, says the Agency. Officials of the fed and the U.S. Treasury came to the conclusion that Moscow fears the freezing of assets from the United States, although the score did not fall under the sanctions, said sources.

After about two weeks the Bank of Russia returned most of the money back to the accounts of the Federal reserve, however, the incident prompted the U.S. government to monitor the accounts more carefully.

The Bank of Russia said the Agency would not comment on «details of its operation and interaction with partners.» The Russian Embassy in Washington did not respond to a request of the Agency.
