Sociologists from the United States found that people like the most honest seem to be quite «modest» smiles and not «grinning», says the article, published in the journal PLoS One.

«Our results contradict those views that now prevail among surgeons. We found that all aspects of smiles has its own «Golden mean», which is contrary to the principle of «more is better», which today is being practised in the operations for improving the smile. For example, it is important not only how a broad smile, but how inclined the corners of the mouth and the lips themselves,» the scientists write.

A person’s appearance is of great importance, and it affects not only his personal life but on their career and position in society as a whole. For example, in 2011 and 2013, two groups of British researchers found that beautiful people have on average a higher IQ and often get jobs than people with ordinary or unsightly appearance.

Similar dependence exists among women and among men, and makes many, especially the fairer sex, fixing the appearance with plastic surgery, or to change the behavior, including manner of smile. For example, people often believe that emphasized bright smile «ear to ear» features a companion more than a regular expression.

Sofia Lyford-pike (Sofia Lyford-Pike) at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis (USA) and her colleagues found that it’s actually not so, having an unusual experiment involving more than 800 volunteers who have agreed to view hundreds of photos of smiling people and appreciate their attractiveness and sincerity.

These pictures and short videos that I watched volunteers had prepared a special computer program that could change all possible features of their entities. For example, she could adjust the location of the corners of the mouth, the distance between the upper and lower lip, their curvature, and many other elementa that make up the smile.

Studying the response of volunteers at these images, scientists noticed that people were generally quite modest and prefer a «medium» smile is when the mouth was opened quite narrow, and the corners of her mouth were not placed too low. In addition, assistants Lyford-pike and her colleagues appreciated the symmetry of the smile and not too open teeth.

All of these features, according to scientists, surgeons and beauticians can use when working with those who wish to improve their appearance to make themselves more attractive.
