The response to the extension of EU sanctions are imposed to protect national interests and support sectors of the economy, said Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Medvedev at a government meeting on Thursday.

«We have to take this step and in order to protect their national interests, but also to support a very important sector of our economy. Since introducing retaliatory measures, we support the Russian agricultural sector. And farmers have repeatedly asked us for the extension of such measures, and to outline the perspective of how they will act in the near future», — said Medvedev.

Earlier, Medvedev said that the Russian government will submit to President Vladimir Putin proposals on the extension of measures on sanctions the EU until 31 December 2018, with the President the issue was discussed. The Prime Minister said that the response to the extension of EU sanctions are imposed to protect national interests and support sectors of the economy, particularly the agricultural sector. He expressed hope that Russian producers will be able to take advantage of the extension response in full.
