The EU’s decision to extend until 31 January 2018 economic sanctions against Russia published in the Official journal of the organization and shall come into force.

According to the published document, the decision will come into force the day after publication.

On Wednesday, the EU Council by written procedure, not involving the conduct of meetings adopted a formal decision to extend by six months of economic restrictive measures against Russia in force until the end of July 2017. Therefore, the Board consolidated the political decision taken by the leaders of the countries-members of EU at the summit on 22 June.

Relations between Russia and the West deteriorated in connection with the situation in Crimea and Ukraine. At the end of July 2014, the EU and the USA from the point of sanctions against certain individuals and companies have moved to measures against entire sectors of the Russian economy. The EU summit in March 2015 linked the validity of economic sanctions with the full implementation «of the Minsk agreements».

In response to the adopted measures by the West, Russia has restricted food imports from countries that have imposed sanctions against her: USA, EU States, Canada, Australia and Norway. Moscow has repeatedly stated that he considers absurd to link sanctions with the implementation of the Minsk agreement on Ukraine, as Russia is not a party to domestic conflict and the subject of the agreements on the settlement. Also Moscow has repeatedly said that talking to Russia in language of sanctions counterproductive.
