People’s project the Red Dot has recorded an unusual periodic radio signals emanating from the star GJ 447, not like natural sources of radio waves, says astronomer Abel Mendez in his blog on the website of the University of Puerto Rico.

«Our colleagues from the SETI is aware of this signal – we had never seen satellites or other objects emitted so unusual radiospace. Of course, the angle of the «Arecibo» is very wide and the telescope could catch some other signal generated by some man-made object in Earth orbit,» writes Mendez.

For more than half a century astronomers from the Institute of search for extraterrestrial intelligence SETI in the United States and their colleagues around the world are trying to find life beyond Earth, listening to the radio signals coming from different corners of the galaxy. While reasonable or unreasonable life could not be found, but this task, according to representatives of NASA and SETI, can be solved very soon – in the next 10-20 years.

For all 56 years of work, astronomers SETI has failed to find definitive traces of extraterrestrial civilizations with one small and controversial exception. This role claim so-called «Wow signal!», caught by radio telescope «Big ear» in 1977. In later years astronomers were unable to re-find the source of this signal in the constellation Sagittarius, which forced scientists to consider it a reflection of radio waves from the Earth by pieces of space garbage.

Mendez and his colleagues accidentally discovered an unusual burst of radio waves, claiming to shift «signal Wow!» from the pedestal potential of the traces of the «alien» civilizations in pursuit of very different scientific objectives.

It tells the Puerto Rican astronomer, he and his team participate in the draft Red Dot – initiative to search for planets orbiting red dwarf stars, like the recently opened «twin» of the Earth have shone TRAPPIST-1. Observing the changes in the illumination of stars in the immediate vicinity of the Earth, astronomers are trying to find evidence for planets passing across their disk, and study their physical properties and chemical composition.

Radio telescopes, like «Arecibo», playing such observations an indirect role – they need scientists not to search for potentially habitable planets, and observations of unusual radiosystemy on the surface of the red dwarf stars that are not associated with bursts of x-rays and ultraviolet light. These outbreaks may be associated with episodes of interaction between the magnetic fields of planets and stars, and their study will help scientists to understand whether the turbulent nature of these stars to prevent the origination of life on these analogues of the Earth.

By studying the data collected during observations of the family like the stars with 300-meter dish «Arecibo» in may, Mendez and his colleagues noticed something unusual – a strange repeating radio signal that came from the star GJ 447 was not like any earthly type of interference or radio waves.

Now, as scientists assume, the source of this signal could be either some flash on the surface of GJ 447, or some processes in space between a red dwarf and Earth.

Today, Mendez and his colleagues conducted repeated observations of GJ 447, in which, they hope, they managed to collect enough data to either prove the extraterrestrial nature of the signal, or confirm that it has given rise to satellites in high orbit, or some other man-made objects in near-earth space. As kidding astronomer, he has already prepared guys colada, a traditional Caribbean cocktail, just in case, if the signal is truly extraterrestrial origin.
