American biologists have uncovered an unusual relationship between species composition and number of microbes in the microflora of babies and how quickly they master it and develop your intelligence in the first two years of life, according to the press service of the University of North Carolina.

«Do microbes with the brain directly? We are now trying to find the answer to this question and are looking for possible channels of communication between the microbiota and nervous system. In addition, it is also possible that bacteria associated with the development of the brain indirectly, reacting with him on some other factor, for example, on a diet or nutrients,» says Rebecca Nymeyer (Rebecca Knickmeyer) from the University of North Carolina at chapel hill (USA).

The human body contains about 10 times more bacteria, fungi and other representatives of the microflora than our own cells. Observations of recent years show that microflora can affect not only the human metabolism and the likelihood of developing cancer and other diseases, but also on its behavior.

For example, a year ago, American biologists have discovered, by experimenting on mice that the development of autism may be due to a lack of one kind of germs, bacteria, Lactobasillus reuteri in the gut of children and their mothers. This year, biologists have found that bacteria of the microflora influence the behavior of women and the structure of their brain.

Nymeyer and her colleagues found that there is a relationship between intellectual development in the first years of life, and species composition of microflora in observing about nine dozen babies from different parts of North Carolina, whose parents agreed to participate in the experiments of scientists.

In the course of these experiments, the biologists were regularly taken samples of the microflora and watched how quickly babies learn to talk, to respond to external stimuli and to solve simple tasks, specially selected for the level 1-2 year old children. In addition, the researchers observed the development of their brain using magnetic resonance imaging.

Analyzing and comparing all the data collected during two years of similar observations, team Nymeyer found that babies can be divided into three groups according to their level of intellectual development and associated features in their microflora.

For example, children in whose intestine is inhabited by a large number of microbes of the genus Bacteroides, on average, much faster developed than their peers, had studied to speak and to perform difficult for babies of the problem. These microbes previously associated with thick crust and less exposure to emotions among women. In turn, children with a large number of bacteria of the genus Faecalibacterium, on the contrary, has developed the slowest. In addition to the tests, these differences are manifested and how thick was the bark babies ‘ brains and as quickly formed a connection between her cells.

Interestingly, the relatively low rate of intellectual development was also characteristic of children with high levels of species diversity of the microflora. It was a surprise to scientists, because the high species diversity used to be considered a sign of a healthy and useful for the development of microflora.

«Initially, we believed that children with a rich microflora will develop faster than their peers with poor species composition of bacteria, as the research of our colleagues have shown that the poverty of the microflora associated with the development of type I diabetes and asthma. It seems that the optimal microbiome for the development of the brain and mind is nothing like the one that is stronger than all helps to grow the rest of the body,» concludes Nymeyer.
