Deliveries of anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM) manufactured in the USA could be the beginning of equipping the Ukrainian army with American lethal weapon, says former head of the main Department of international military cooperation of the Russian Ministry of defense (1996-2001), President of Academy of geopolitical problems Colonel-General Leonid Ivashov.

Earlier, the Wall Street Journal, citing U.S. officials reported that the Pentagon and the US state Department has developed a plan of supplying Ukraine with antitank missiles and other weapons. Approval from the White house has not yet been reported.

«Deliveries of anti-tank guided missiles, the Ukrainian army is another project (former U.S. President Barack) Obama. It was pushed through and (Senator-Republican John) McCain. When the question about the supply of lethal weapons, anti-tank stood on the first place. I justified it by the fact that in the Donbass are Russian tanks», — told RIA Novosti on Tuesday Ivashov.

He noted that the President of the United States Donald Trump needs Ukraine only as an obstacle to Russian gas supplies to Europe.

«But the same forces that unraveled the Ukrainian-Russian conflict, were preparing a coup, has invested a lot of money in it to place the coup in Ukraine, they, of course, promote this project. Rather, trump would agree with that — he’s not so stable position,» — said the expert.

He believes that «for the ATGM will probably, and other kinds of lethal weapons».

According to Ivashov, the American supply is a small fraction of the capacity weapons to the Ukrainian army.

«Ukraine today winds up its military-industrial complex, and he regularly delivers armored vehicles, tanks and helicopters — repairs, upgrades. So the basis of the supply of the Ukrainian army — it is an internal defense industry that was left of it», — concluded the President of Academy of geopolitical problems.

Against arms shipments to Ukraine speak for the majority of European politicians. Thus, the ex-foreign Minister of Germany, former Chairman of the OSCE, the President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier said earlier that the supply of weapons to Ukraine are very risky and counterproductive way out of the crisis. The Chairman of the NATO military Committee Petr Pavel said that he sees no need to supply lethal weapons to Kiev, because it «will only increase the suffering of the people.»

The Ukrainian authorities in April 2014 began a military operation against the breakaway LC and the DNI, which declared independence after a coup in Ukraine in February 2014. According to the latest UN victims of the conflict began more than 10 thousand people.

The settlement of the situation in the Donbass is discussed, including during meetings in Minsk the contact group, which from September 2014 adopted three documents regulating the steps to de-escalate the conflict. However, after the armistice agreements between the parties to the conflict continue shooting.
