Scientists of the Institute of chemical biology and fundamental medicine (SB RAS Abihm) has created a perspective for future work, the variant of vaccines against cancer based on the cells, the activating anti-tumor response of the immune system, according to the publication, Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences «Science in Siberia».

The newspaper notes that the drug is created based on dendritic cells, which are of bone marrow origin and are antigen-presenting. They absorb a tumor antigen, process it within themselves and present it to the T-cells (immune system cells), activating the immune response. Thus T-lymphocytes begin to distinguish our own cells from infected, tumor or alien. Such strategy of creation of anticancer vaccines is called immunotherapy.

«Standard methods against tumor diseases, such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy, have many negative effects, for example, dared action, which killed the healthy tissue. Immunotherapy does not have strong side effects, triggers the body’s own resources to fight the tumor and has the specificity,» prepodaet edition of the words of a researcher of icbfm SB RAS Oleg Markov.

The scheme of receiving the vaccine consists of the following: taking the patient’s peripheral blood, from which the immature dendritic cells, load them with various tumor antigens stimulate the maturation of dendritic cells, and then injected back into the body. Still not solved the problem of efficient delivery of antigens to dendritic cells.

Icbfm SB RAS scientists working on this problem and synthesized liposomes that deliver nucleic acids encoding tumor antigens, is directed to dendritic cells. «Created according to this principle, the vaccine was tested in mice: its application has led to the fact that the number of metastasis of melanoma in mice was decreased by 5-6 times compared to the control group», — stated in the material.
