The approval of the media that the U.S. Embassy in Russia has deliberately increased the number of refusals of visas have nothing to do with reality, told RIA Novosti press-Secretary of the Embassy Maria Olson.

Previously, the newspaper The New York Times with reference to the representative of the firm helping the citizens of Russia to obtain right of entry in the United States, reported that the Russians were more likely to refuse U.S. visas after Moscow responded to the sanctions bill Washington’s decision to reduce the staff of the diplomatic missions of the USA in the country.

«We are aware of numerous media reports, which contain attempts to analyse the impact of downsizing Embassy and Consulate in Russia. It is too early to predict how the reduction may affect the visa process. But it is possible that this will reduce the efficiency of the consular activity. However, allegations that the U.S. mission in Russia has deliberately increased the number of refusals of visas have nothing to do with reality,» said Olson.

She noted that some publications refer to adjustments of requirements for a visa check, which «was carried out earlier this year in the American missions around the world.»

«But there’s no connection. Those adjustments have been carried out in accordance with the Memorandum of the President of the United States from March 6, 2017 on strengthening security of the visa process. They relate to cases in which the consular officer believes that certain information required to confirm identification or to resolve issues related to security,» added Olson.

She reminded that these changes affect less than one percent of the 13 million — total number of annual visits for a us visa around the world.
