Lost in translation

«We lived in the soldiers’ barracks on the Yauza river, worked on the parade ground in any weather. When it was particularly hot, we were woken up at 5:30 in the morning, and before nine we were trained. Then I had Breakfast and 16 hours was free, but access to the city almost was not. We were given six coupons on the output to each platoon. They played the lottery. In the end I’m lucky too, we girls saw Moscow, went to the movie «four Hearts», were at the theatre and the Kremlin. I still remember the day: July 21, 1957 I was first in the Kremlin. We first went to the Armory, then walked around the yard, I met people from the Belarusian column. In principle, this was almost training camp, we trained very seriously, and we are perfectly made, created a furor. There was so much raging applause and we shouted in different languages: «Thank you! Good! Good!» — says the participant.

This year Valentina Chistyakova wants to get to the festival in Sochi, where her granddaughter she already has applied as a volunteer.

Participant of «Star of the relay world,» the athlete Vitaly Balance, thanks to the knowledge of the German language, the festival of 1957 was just one of the most unusual encounters of his life. On the finish of the relay, he came over to autograph the girl from the German delegation on behalf of Tamara Bunke.

«She was a student at Berlin school of ballet. The next day — July 30, 1957 — we agreed to go to Red square. There are already got to talking and decided to go to the Palace of culture, Moscow state University, which hosted dance parties. Danced she is really superb. Several times we are on such evenings go, then I sent her to Berlin photography festival, and in reply received a letter: «Dear friend, thanks for the photos, I’m going to Argentina to see his parents». Her mother was a Jew from the USSR, and her father was a German Communist. When Hitler came to power, they immigrated to Argentina, where Tamara was born. She knew Spanish well, and spoke in Russian, however, is not so good. But at the festival she came from Berlin in the delegation of the GDR. Many years later I was to find her. Once I arrived in Berlin and Leipzig, was asked about a ballerina, but I answered that in the GDR there is no such. It turned out she joined the detachment of Che Guevara, has become an underground fighter, a radio operator, and, unfortunately, died in 1964 in Bolivia. She is buried in Santiago Cuba, in the mausoleum, where Che Guevara himself is buried. I also know that she took the pseudonym Tanya Gualtieri, in honor of our Zoe Kosmodemyanskoy, which is also underground name was Tanya», — said Vitaly Boltok.

With the festival of 1957 is the whole culture of the cult songs «Moscow nights», «Lenin hills», «If the guys all the earth», «people of the world, stand up for a minute» to the paintings, posters and symbols. The emblem of the festival — Daisy with five leaves by the number of continents also became recognizable as the Olympic rings. But only in 1985 at the festival there is an analogue of Olympic bears — the girl Katyusha. The author of the talisman, artist Michael, Veremenko was only 29 years old when he woke up famous throughout the Union as the «father» of the hostess of the festival.

«When I went home after the meeting with the Committee of the festival, the bus driver turned on the receiver, and began to play «Katyusha». Was the year on the eve of the 40th anniversary of the Victory, and in General, «Katyusha» was a very popular song, she knew, and now know all over the world. I thought, «why not draw the image and call Katya?». And while traveling, came up with that festival Daisy transformirovalsya in Russian kokoshnik. Everything else there was just a child — a symbol of the future, and the girl — a symbol of a peaceful future, she will not fight. In her hands a dove, because it is a recognized symbol of peace,» — says the artist.

The prototype of the Katyusha was a two-year niece of the artist Dasha. Perhaps partly because of her face, festival, 1985 differed from the previous Convention of young people in Moscow new level of openness and human interaction.

«In the evening thousands of young people came to Manezhnaya square with guitars, dolls, do theatrical performances. The Red square is not allowed, and from the Manege square to the Bolshoi theatre informal youth suit your party. It was a spontaneous holiday. There were the French and the Americans and the British — all the delegates of the festival took to the streets, sang songs under a guitar. There was a huge «trickle» — a game — from Arena to the Bolshoi theatre, a kilometer you can go for this stream from someone’s hand. The ideological background is gone. All talked, because he was young, funny, because like the same things — painting, music, the Beatles are the same — it was all common to us all. This festival we really need right now, because the world is such an aggressive disinformation about our country. It is very much felt abroad, people do not understand who we are, we are afraid, but not because we are terrible, but because that’s so mainstream, to create a certain image. And then people came with an open mind, they were open, wanted to communicate,» — said Veremenko
