In the Tazovsky district of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous district opened a criminal case into the killing of six polar bears listed in the Red book, according to the district attorney’s office.

The information found on the island of Vilkitskogo the remains of six species of wild polar bear and shell casings near them came to the police on 24 July from the members of the expedition «Russian centre of Arctic exploration».

The Supervisory Agency emphasize that the local Department of the interior, upon receiving this information, decided not to prosecute, despite the existence of a crime. Prosecutors had to make to the head of Department the requirement to eliminate violations of the law.

«By results of consideration by August 1, 2017 Department inquiry OMVD Russia in the Tazovsky district initiated a criminal case under part 1 of article 258.1 of the criminal code — «illegal production of particularly valuable wild animals belonging to species listed in the Red book of the Russian Federation», — stated in the message of Prosecutor’s office of Yamal.

Rare animals on the island of Vilkitskogo regularly become victims of illegal hunters. In early may in the area were detained poachers suspected of killing a white bear, whose skin was discovered by members of the same expedition.
