The chamber of deputies of the National Congress of Brazil on Wednesday did not receive a sufficient number of votes to allow the Supreme court to start criminal proceedings against the President Michel Temer, who is accused of corruption, which could result in his resignation.

During the broadcast on local television of a vote against the proposal already voted 161 MP that makes it impossible – given the absentees and abstentions – the supporters of the resignation of Temer to muster two-thirds votes, as required by law.

In case of approval process by MPs Temer would be removed from power for 180 days for consideration of the case to the Supreme court. Temer, if convicted, has finally been deposed as head of state — exactly the same as a year earlier his predecessor Dilma Rousseff.

Allegations of corruption against the President were sent to the lower house of Congress in late June. Earlier, Prosecutor General of Brazil, Rodrigo Janot officially filed against Temer charged with «passive corruption».

The investigation against Temer is carried out in accordance with a request by one of the deputies after the portal Globo published an audio recording on which Brazilian leader talks to the owner of the company for the production of meat, JBS Lesli Batista. Their meeting took place on 7 March. During the meeting, Temer allegedly gives the order to pay more than 630 thousand dollars of eks-the head of the chamber of deputies, Eduardo Cunha for «silence» on the case of corruption around oil company Petrobras.

Batista said on the participation of Temer in the corruption scheme in the government since 2010. He noted that in this scheme, policy extorted bribes from high-ranking officials in exchange for political support. Now the process against Temer will be suspended until the expiration of his term of office on the post of the head of state at the end of 2018, and to answer before the justice, he will be able to 2019.
