Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed the Ministry of energy jointly with the authorities of Buryatia to study the issue of supply of electricity from this region to Mongolia.

Mongolia wants to build a hydropower plant on the Selenge river and its tributaries flowing into Baikal, but the Russian side has repeatedly stated about the high environmental risks of the project. This topic has been discussed not the first year. While Russia expresses its readiness to assist Mongolia in compensation of the lack of electricity in this country. One option is the construction of overhead transmission lines from Russia to Mongolia.

During the meeting on issues of environmental development on Friday, the Director of the world wildlife Fund in Russia (WWF Russia), Igor Chestin reiterated the high risks to lake Baikal from the construction of hydropower plant on the Selenge river and legal failure to address this question. The solution he sees in the participation in the international Convention for the evaluation of the impact on the environment. Chestin has asked the Russian President to give instructions to ensure Russia’s accession to the Convention.

Putin assured that the Russian authorities are engaged in the issue of building power plants in Mongolia. «I talked with several associates. But they say that no one on the river Selenga was going to build, and one of the tributaries. And it will not affect the ecological situation. We are in contact with colleagues. I think you need to consider your offer,» replied the Russian President.

The acting Governor of Buryatia Alexey Tsydenov, in turn, said that the government of the Republic proposed to supply electricity from the region in Mongolia. «We in the region have a surplus. Previously looked — we get a competitive price on electricity… with HPP they fall in credit to China, we have loan will not be», — he said.

«I have a request to instruct the energy Ministry to work out a plan, and that we may a formal offer of price and conditions to do so,» appealed to Tsydenov to the President of the Russian Federation. «Please, let us, too, in order to write the energy», — concluded Putin.

The Russian side has repeatedly stated that the construction of transmission lines will be cheaper than the construction of hydroelectric power station in Mongolia. In particular, in the materials of «Russian grids» to the SPIEF-2017 cost of construction of 500 kV lines from Russia to Mongolia was estimated at about $ 1 billion, while the construction of hydroelectric power station in Mongolia (to 790 MW), as calculated by the company, would cost approximately $ 1.9 billion.
