The Ambassador of Czech Republic to Russia Vladimir Remek believes that maintaining the transit of gas through Ukraine is necessary to Europe’s energy security, he stated in an interview with RIA Novosti.

Answering the question whether the Prague project of the pipeline «Nord stream — 2», Remek said that the Czech Republic primarily supports the diversification of energy resources.

«With regard to the diversification of energy transit routes, it is important that it was a real diversification, not only the replacement of one track to the second. Transit route through Ukraine, therefore, necessary for the energy security of Europe. Speaking of «Nord stream — 2», Czech Republic also insists that the project was not implemented contrary to the European legislation. Legislative issues of «Nord stream — 2″ are currently being discussed in the EU,» he added.

The project «Northern stream — 2» involves the construction of two pipelines with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas annually from the Russian coast via the Baltic sea to Germany. The new pipeline is planned to be build next to the existing «Northern stream».
