The Ambassador of Czech Republic to Russia Vladimir Remek believes the anti-Russian sanctions from the EU’s unconstructive tool which only worsens the situation of ordinary people.

Relations between Russia and the West deteriorated over the situation in Ukraine. Western countries have imposed a series of sanctions against Russia, Moscow has retaliated.

The diplomat believes that it is necessary to improve the relations of Russia and the European Union.

«I don’t think that some sudden leap to do something (to improve relations Russia and the EU – ed.) in the foreseeable future. But obviously we need to do it» — he said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

«We are now preparing the visit of our President to Russia. I’d really hoped that this visit can contribute to some better understanding. Because I respect personally of the opinion that the sanctions themselves is, in principle, not constructive. Our President, cites the example of U.S. sanctions against Cuba and what America for nearly half a century, virtually nothing was achieved. The only thing that usually accompanies the sanctions are the deterioration of the situation of the common people. So I do not expect a dramatic change (in relations between Russia and the EU – ed.) but I hope that gradually will be improved understanding,» the diplomat added.
