The earthquake, which occurred on Monday on the island of Ischia in the Tyrrhenian sea, the ground level in the area of Casamicciola Terme, decreased approximately 4 inches, reported Saturday the Italian scientists.

Measurements a team of researchers from the Institute of electromagnetic surveying conducted by the European satellites Sentinel-1 and the Italian COSMO-SkyMed. On the basis of space information and revealed such a significant ground subsidence near the epicenter of the earthquake.

Quake on the island of Ischia was recorded on August 21 in 20.58 (21.58 GMT). Initially, the national Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, Italy reported a 3.6 magnitude earthquake, but after midnight, experts have adjusted their assessment and reported that the magnitude was 4.0. The epicenter was located in the vicinity of the Western coast of Ischia in the sea at a depth of about 5 kilometers. According to seismologists, the first underground shock was followed by about 20 a weaker aftershock. The victims of the disaster were two women, 39 people were injured, about 2.6 thousand were left homeless.

Satellites Sentinel-1 creates high-precision radar maps of the Earth. With their help, the earlier data were obtained on removing the soil by a series of earthquakes, as well as information allowing to assess the power of nuclear weapons tested, Korea in 2016.
