Nanoissledovaniya of the Higher school of Economics and the University hospital charité in Berlin has proposed a method able to predict at what points the brain processing of information is faster. This method allows to predict behavioral response to the stimulus on the basis of the phase of oscillations recorded with electroencephalography (EEG). This approach is related to a possible presentation of a stimulus in the most sensitive to brain processes time intervals, may in future find application in various areas, including therapy, training and sports. The study is published in the prestigious journal Neuroimage.

Even at rest the human brain is generation of complex vibrations that can be registered using EEG.
These vibrations have different frequencies (for example, alpha oscillations ~ 10 Hz, beta ~ 20 Hz, theta ~ 7 Hz) and recorded by devices such as change of the electric field generated by the neurons. One of the popular hypotheses is that a person’s ability to react to various stimuli and to process information depends on what the amplitude or the phase of the oscillation signal arrives.

According to scientists, the new method is important in identifying the neuronal processes that lead to optimal responding to stimuli. In the applied aspect, it may be important to professional athletes and doctors: for example, for the understanding of pathological neuronal processes associated with Parkinson’s disease where patients have difficulties with starting the movement.

«Using more sensitive methods of extraction of neuronal signals, we can find the phase of neuronal oscillations, against which people make maximum use of the resources of my brain, — says Vadim Nikulin. And if the dream and look into the future, one can imagine and the school of foreign languages, where students sit in a convenient electrode caps and learn new words that apply during periods of maximum susceptibility of the brain to new information».
