The suspension of the issuance of U.S. visas to Russian citizens is not a revenge on the decision of the Ministry of foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation on the reduction of the number of employees of the U.S. Embassy, it is the result of this decision, says U.S. Ambassador John Tefft.

The U.S. Embassy in its official account on YouTube has posted a video response Tefft corresponding to the user’s question from Russia.

According to his statement, «the suspension of issuing visas is the result of the decision of the Russian government to limit the number of our personnel, and not the answer».

He admitted also that the States «had expected the Russian side to such a will not come.»

Earlier, Moscow has ordered to reduce the U.S. diplomatic mission in Russia to 755 to 455 employees. Thus, Moscow has equated the number of employees of the U.S. Embassy in Russia, the number of employed in the Russian diplomatic mission in the United States. According to the statement of the foreign Ministry, these measures were a response to anti-Russian policy adopted by the us Congress of the new anti-Russian sanctions.

In turn, the US 23 Aug suspended the procedure for issuing nonimmigrant visas throughout Russia. From September 1 this procedure resumes, but only at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow. Washington explained the innovations to the reduced number of employees. Early American visa issued Consulate in St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg and Vladivostok.
