The Minister of defence of the USA James Mattis during his visit to Kiev brought the defence equipment for the Armed forces of Ukraine, said the special representative of the United States Ukraine Kurt Volker in an interview to «Direct».

«I agree that Ministers of defense do not come with empty hands. The Minister of defence (James Mattis — ed.) brought a certain defence equipment for the Ukrainian army,» said Walker.

He also believes that the Russian-Belarusian military exercises «West-2017» force the Western countries to be prepared for any eventuality.

«I think that these military exercises of Russia forced us to be ready for any military aggression, the Western community should be ready for any eventuality, we have to develop our own security system and work it out together,» said Walker.

Earlier, Mattis said that Washington is considering providing Kiev with lethal weapons, its recommendations to the leadership of the country he will represent at the end of the visit.

Russia has repeatedly warned against plans arms deliveries to Ukraine, because this step will only lead to the escalation of the conflict in the Donbass. As repeatedly stated by the press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov, the supply of weapons to Ukraine from the outside will not contribute to resolving the crisis in the Donbas and the implementation of the Minsk agreements.

Against arms shipments to Ukraine voted most European politicians. Thus, the ex-foreign Minister of Germany, former Chairman of the OSCE, the President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier said earlier that the supply of weapons to Ukraine are very risky and counterproductive way out of the crisis.

Russian-Belarusian strategic exercises «West-2017» will be held in Belarus from 14 to 20 September.

Earlier, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg urged Russia «to respect their obligations under the transparency (of the exercise) and to ensure compliance with its obligations under the Vienna document 2011 of the OSCE («On measures of strengthening trust and security»)».

As reported in the Ministry of foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, the total number of personnel and equipment on the upcoming trainings will not exceed the level required observation of certain military activities, established by the Vienna document 2011.
