The government of Catalonia will begin to remove spontaneous memorials in Barcelona, dedicated to the victims of the attacks, on Monday evening, reports Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia.

The publication quoted the first Deputy mayor of Barcelona, Gerardo Pisarello, saying that «memorials will be photographed, documented and immortalized in memory» in order for these signs of solidarity were accessible to citizens in the future. The decision to remove spontaneous memorials, the city authorities argue that they want to restore the normal bandwidth of the main pedestrian street of the city and to restore the functioning of trade points located on it.

Spontaneous memorials, which reached number 131 will be removed, however, according to Pisarello, «at the beginning of the Rambla, where the attack occurred, will be allocated a special area where visitors will be able to continue to bring flowers and candles». Earlier, the mayor of Barcelona Hell Cola have already noted that in the area of the attack can be mounted memorial in memory of the tragedy. Cola noted that, obviously, the Rambla will be a monument to «this horrible tragedy» that occurred in Barcelona.

On the afternoon of 17 August, the van drove into a crowd of people in the area of Las Ramblas in Barcelona. Responsibility for the attack claimed by the terrorist group ISIS* (banned in Russia). Later in the day a similar incident occurred in Alicante, 120 km from Barcelona. According to official data, as a result of the terrorist attacks in Spain and 16 people were killed, 130 injured.

According to militiamen, the group behind the attacks were 12 people. Four of them were arrested, five were destroyed after the attack in Marbella. Two more, including the main organizer of the terrorist attacks, the Imam of Abdelbaki es-Sati, died on the eve of the attacks in an explosion at a house in Alcanar, where terrorists were preparing a bomb. The driver of the van ran over the crowd in Barcelona, 22-year-old Moroccan Younes Abuaku, were eliminated during a special operation in Subirats on August 21.
