The new Ambassador of Latvia in Russia Maris Riekstins believes the purpose of his work improving relations between the two countries and the deliverance from the accumulated prejudices in the relationship.

Riekstins was appointed Ambassador of Latvia in Russia on August 17.

«Purely objectively, we with Russia are close neighbors, despite the fact that our history in the last century was quite complex, and humans and the one and on the other hand there is resentment, pain, say, because of the repression; but also in our relationship a lot of prejudice. The task of the diplomat is to work to the second party in its policy had not rested or less rested on prejudice,» said Riekstins in an interview with the newspaper Diena, published on Monday.

He stressed that the work of the Ambassador of Latvia in Russia has never been easy.

«I don’t want to say that it is an impossible mission, but it is a difficult task,» — said the diplomat.

However, he noted that lately relations between Russia and Latvia has positive dynamics.

«At the moment, the EU has imposed enough sanctions on Russia and we are among these countries. But over the past year had shown sufficient flexibility in dialogue and cooperation. If we look at the statistics of 2016, we will be able to predict how it will end for us in 2017. For 2016, the turnover from trade of goods between Latvia and Russia is about 1.8 billion, which is not a small amount. Russia is also a considerable amount of money. Their export amounts to about a billion euros, and our exports to them — about 800 million,» he said.

Riekstins was born in 1963, in 1985 graduated from the Latvian state Institute of physical culture, and in 1993 the law faculty of the University of Latvia. The Ministry of foreign Affairs of Latvia has worked since 1992. In 2004-2007 — the Ambassador of Latvia to the United States, and in 2006-2007 — part-time also in Mexico. From 2007 to 2010 he held the post of Minister of foreign Affairs of Latvia. From 2011 to 2015 was representative of Latvia to NATO. Recently he held the position of inspector General of the foreign Ministry of Latvia.
