The special representative of the United States Ukraine Kurt Volker said that Russia wants to «freeze» the situation in the Donbass, however, that, in his opinion, would have serious international consequences for Moscow.

International isolation

The American diplomat believes that Russia is interested in «freezing» the conflict in the Donbass. However, as he said, in this case Russia will be in full international freezing.

«The country may be ejected from the system of diplomatic and economic relations — this is clearly not what is wanted in Russia», — said Walker.

He also acknowledged that the Ukrainian problem prevents the establishment of a constructive dialogue between Russia and the United States. Russian-American relations, according to Volcker, would be to «limp» until until «allowed the Ukrainian problem.»

Crimean issue

Previously, Mr. Walker, speaking about other issues in the security sector of Ukraine, also commented on the issue of recognition of the Crimea.

«In 1994, no one thought that Russia would do that,» said the American diplomat.

He also said that the United States will never recognize the annexation of Crimea to Russia.

«We will never recognize the annexation of Crimea, the EU does not recognize the annexation of Crimea. There is no way it can be done. In Crimea and Donbass, we have very similar positions with the EU», — said Walker.

Crimea became a Russian region on the basis of a referendum held after a coup in Ukraine. For reunification with Russia voted more than 95% of the inhabitants of the Peninsula.

Military assistance to Ukraine

The special representative of Ukraine also informed that in Washington there is an active and «serious discussion» of the issue of the provision of the Kiev military assistance, in particular, the U.S. is considering the possibility of supplying lethal defensive arms.

Earlier, the us diplomat said that the Pentagon chief James Mattis during his visit brought for the armed forces defence equipment, stressing that «the Ministers of defense do not come with empty hands».

Walker noted that the last word on the issue of arms supplies to Ukraine remains the American leader Donald trump.

Russia has repeatedly stated that the US plans to supply weapons to Ukraine will only worsen the situation and lead to the escalation of the situation in the Donbass. In addition, in the Kremlin, stressed that the supply of military equipment to Ukraine from the outside will not contribute to the implementation of the Minsk agreements.

Many European politicians also oppose arms supplies to Ukraine. Thus, the ex-foreign Minister of Germany, President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier said earlier that the supply of arms to Ukraine is risky and counterproductive method of conflict resolution.Earlier, the us diplomat also said that Ukraine’s decision to renounce nuclear weapons was correct, while Walker has warned Kiev against any attempts to restore its nuclear program. The special representative noted that nuclear weapons would not be something positive for Ukraine.

Ukraine inherited a substantial nuclear Arsenal after the Soviet collapse, but in the future, Kiev joined the Treaty on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and destroyed on their territory all nuclear weapons and an Arsenal, and in accordance with the Budapest Memorandum of 1994 signed by Ukraine, Russia, the United States and Britain, the nuclear powers guaranteed Ukraine’s security.

Walker also stated that Ukraine is not ready to play in the Alliance, in particular, from the point of view of security. However, he expressed hope that Kiev will be able to successfully implement the necessary reforms, which will create favorable conditions for entry into military-political bloc. The final word regarding accession to NATO, as stressed by Walker, remains behind the Ukrainian side.

In 2014, Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada decision abandoned non-aligned status, and, in 2016, NATO membership was identified as a foreign policy goal of the country.
