The continuation of international research of the Arctic is necessary for implementation of projects on its development, while Russia is not going to give someone their lead in the study of this region of the world, said the special representative of RF President on international cooperation in the Arctic and Antarctic Arthur Chilingarov.

«As a scientist I must stress again the importance of continuing scientific research in the Arctic how to solve practical problems, such as ice wiring and elimination of accidental spills and tasks of the forecast of future changes in the Arctic, impact assessment of such changes and adaptation to them», — said Chilingarov in his report at the VII international meeting of representatives of the member States of the Arctic Council observer countries in the Arctic Council and foreign scientific community.

According to him, joint scientific research have always been and remain the most important direction of international cooperation in the Arctic, and scientific cooperation is one of the priorities of the Arctic Council.

«I hope signed this year the agreement on the strengthening of international Arctic scientific cooperation will allow us to finally proceed with the implementation of the International polar initiative, which we are talking so many years», — said Chilingarov.

He congratulated Chinese scientists on the successful TRANS-Arctic flight research icebreaker «Shi long». «But we’re not going to cede leadership in Arctic research,» said Chilingarov.

«In early November of this year we plan to organize a drifting research station «North pole-41″. The station will be organized by voragine in the ice of the icebreaker, which will be a safe base for polar», — said Chilingarov. He noted that the Russian scientific program drift is open to international participation, and invited foreign scholars to consider the work of their professionals at any stage of the drift-SP-41.
