Military engineers have carried out major work on the aftermath of mudslides in the town of Tyrnyauz in Kabardino-Balkaria, said on Wednesday the head of the press service of the southern military district, Colonel Vadim Astafyev.

«Extending the channel of the Baksan river, with a length of 150 meters and a minimum width of 25 meters, equipped with a protective shaft length of 140 meters and a height of three meters, a volume of soil about 1.5 thousand cubic meters. Also work was done on conducting engineer reconnaissance of congestion on a channel of the Baksan river to determine the characteristics of the bottom, flow velocity and water level rise, there is the entrance length of about 300 meters to the place of performance of works», — he said.

Astafyev noted that for the safe conduct of the work the engineers have built a decking of logs.

«At the moment… cleaned the river of debris in the area of the flooded bridge. Planned construction of the protective walls. For loosening soil, rock, crushing large boulders will be involved in the group of explosive works with the use of shaped charges», he concluded.

Just to eliminate were brought about 50 soldiers.

A mudflow caused by melting of glaciers began in the floodplain of gerhozhan-Suu in Tyrnyauz on August 14. In the area of landslide houses were not hit, no one was hurt. Debris flow demolished a pedestrian bridge, for security reasons it blocked the traffic on the Federal highway Cool — Azau. The district was declared a state of emergency at the municipal level. As a safeguard rescue two nights evacuated residents of several apartment buildings. On the morning of 16 August mudslide has dropped significantly, and the residents returned to their homes. According to scientists, the release of debris flow was about 600 thousand cubic meters, and the total mass of the landslide deposits is about 300 thousand cubic meters.
