Russian woman that visited the ancient temple complex of Bagan in Myanmar, refused to remove their shoes when entering the temples as the Buddhist tradition, and was sentenced by a local court to seven months ‘ imprisonment with punishment serving in a labor camp, said Wednesday the online version of the newspaper Myanmar Times.

«Warned her about what we need to take your shoes off, but she demanded to show her the law, which says that in the temples it is necessary to remove your shoes,» said the newspaper, the witness of the arrest of Russian citizen working for the temple Ananda, one of the oldest and most famous in Bagan. The Russian was arrested on the statement of the Board of Trustees of this Church once called for without removing the shoes, three local shrines.

The newspaper reports that a woman initially sentenced to a fine in the amount of 367 $ (500,000 kyats in local currency) or imprisonment for one month under the criminal code of Myanmar about the insult of religious feelings. Arrested Russian woman refused to pay the fine and chose the jail, the report said. Then, the local immigration office of Myanmar presented her with another charge, by immigration law, under article about the violation of Myanmar customs and traditions, and the court added to the term of another 6 months.

The Russian Embassy in Myanmar RIA Novosti reported that the Russian woman was detained on 1 August, and 25 August she was sentenced. Russian diplomats are constantly in contact with the sister of the arrested women, now expect to receive from the authorities of Myanmar sentence. According to diplomats, the second six-month term, which was sentenced the citizen of the Russian Federation in immigration law, involves a violation of the obligation to respect the customs and traditions of the country that every foreigner signs at the entrance to Myanmar. Embassy of the Russian Federation appealed

the foreign Ministry of Myanmar for explanations in connection with the arrest of Russians and by a court sentence, reported in the Embassy. Diplomats can not yet confirm that the citizen of the Russian Federation sentenced to serving time in a labor camp. The woman turns out to consular assistance. Employees of the consular section visited her in jail Bagan. According to diplomats, the Russian woman feels well and does not complain about conditions of detention.

The ancient Myanmar city of Bagan is located 850 kilometers from the largest city in the country and the former capital of Yangon, where most foreign embassies, including the Russian Embassy.

According to the court decision, the Russian citizen will serve his sentence in a labor camp, the newspaper reports.
