Pope Francis and Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople issued a joint message for the world day of prayer for protection of God’s creation, which is celebrated on 1 September.

About the head of the Roman Catholic Church announced Wednesday during a traditional General audience, which after the August hiatus was held at St. Peter’s square at the Vatican.

«We encourage everyone to carry out respectful and responsible behavior in relationship to creation. In addition, those who occupy influential positions, we are called to hear the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor, who suffer most from environmental imbalance,» said the Pontiff, speaking about the joint message.

Earlier, Pope Francis explained that the Day of prayer for protection of God’s creation is celebrated «in prayerful unity with our Orthodox brothers and with all people of good will to contribute in overcoming the ecological crisis facing mankind.»

During his audience the Pope also greeted the representatives of the Brazilian football club «Epicoene», most players and coaches who died in November last year in the crash of the plane of the Bolivian airline LaMia in Colombia. On Friday in Rome will host a friendly match between «Epicoene» and «Roma», all proceeds from which will be transferred to the Brazilian team.

The General audience at the Vatican, which was attended by about 9 thousand pilgrims from different countries, took place in an environment of enhanced measures to ensure security. Recently in social networks, in particular, in the Telegram, there were calls to commit terrorist acts in Italy and the video where extremists tore the photo of Pope Francis.
