Archaeologists have found in Rostov-na-Donu cult objects belonging to maatam — the mysterious people that inhabited the black sea region in the I Millennium BC, according to local portal Rostov.ru.

Externally, the found object is an artificial hill with a height of about 1.5 meters. The diameter of the structure is approximately four meters. Scientists suggest that this could be the altar on which was celebrated offerings to the gods.

«It’s probably just part of some ritual complex» — says the archaeologist Alexander Nechiporuk, head of the excavation.

At the same time, found the number of religious objects does not allow us to identify the purpose of the structure. Therefore, scientists are considering several versions.

«For example, the building was a symbol of something, as an option, the object that separates the living world from the world of the dead» — allows the archaeologist.

Scientists are still arguing about the ethnicity of the Meotians. Some believe that they are descended from the Indo-Aryan peoples. Others believe that Meotians is the collective name of tribes living in the so-called «Metiska swamps» on the outskirts of the Bosporan Kingdom.
