Groisman: «the Marshall plan» will accelerate the modernization of Ukraine

Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Groysman at the meeting with Chairman of the Lithuanian Seimas Viktoras Pranckietis said that Ukraine supports the idea developed by Lithuania «Marshall plan» and believes that it will accelerate the modernization of Ukraine.

«Ukraine is interested to deepen the political dialogue with Lithuania in the context of relations with the European Union and NATO but also strongly supports the idea of the authorities of Lithuania, on the formation of a kind of «Marshall plan» for Ukraine — the list of necessary changes in the socio-economic sphere and their sources of funding… We introduce a large-scale internal reform and we are grateful to Lithuania for its continuous support. And your initiative «Marshall plan» will accelerate the modernization of Ukraine», — quotes the Ukrainian press service of the Cabinet.

According to the press service, the sides during the meeting discussed the necessity of developing bilateral relations, particularly in the field of logistics capabilities of the two States. Groisman also said that in the first half of the year the trade turnover between Ukraine and Lithuania exceeded $ 400 million, but there is every possibility to bring this figure up to $ 1 billion.

Earlier the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko reported that during the summit Ukraine-EU on 12-13 July in Kiev, discussed with the EU the possibility to develop a new long-term plan for economic support of Ukraine on the type of «Marshall plan». According to him, such a plan should promote stabilization and economic growth of Ukraine.

In late March, the Congress of the European people’s party, on the initiative of the Lithuanian policy of Andrius Kubilius has approved a resolution «On plans for long-term support of Ukraine.» The document notes that the EU needs to create programs to support military, humanitarian and economic spheres.

The Marshall plan — the program of aid to Europe after world war II. The stated US goal of implementing the plan was the restoration of war-ravaged economies of Europe, removing trade barriers, modernising industry and the development of European countries.
