Petro Poroshenko has addressed with the initiative to dig a canal between the Azov and the Black seas, thus cutting off the Crimean Peninsula from the mainland. A petition posted on the official website of the President.

The Creator of the petition has calculated that the channel length does not exceed five miles, and its construction will create tens of thousands of jobs and lead to «breakthrough» to the sea of Azov and the black sea ports of the country. «This is a win-win situation from all points of view,» concludes the author of the initiative. However, after two days, the petition received less than 50 votes out of the 25 Grand needed for consideration.

Crimea became a Russian region after held in March 2014 referendum in which 96.77% of voters of the Republic of Crimea and 95.6% of residents of Sevastopol voted for joining Russia. Crimean authorities held a referendum after a coup in Ukraine in February 2014.

Ukraine still considers Crimea its but temporarily occupied territory.
