The believers will pass religious procession along Nevsky Prospekt from the Kazan Cathedral to the Alexander Nevsky square in St. Petersburg in honor of the day of the relics of the Holy Prince, said the communications sector St. Petersburg Metropolitanate.

«There will be a citywide and Church holiday – the day of the relics of the Holy Prince Alexander Nevsky. The programme of events included a city-wide festive procession along Nevsky Prospekt from the Kazan Cathedral to the Alexander Nevsky square», — is told in the message.

In the procession which will be headed by the Metropolitan of St. Petersburg and Ladoga Varsonofy, will be attended by the clergy of St. Petersburg Metropolia, representatives of Orthodox parishes of the city and region, public organizations, students of theological schools, Orthodox brotherhoods, representatives of the Orthodox communities in different cities of Russia and citizens.

In addition, this day will be a festive Liturgy in the Kazan Cathedral, headed by Metropolitan Varsonofy. Liturgy at the Holy Trinity Cathedral of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra will be headed by the monastery’s Deputy Abbot, Bishop Nazary of Kronstadt.

At 11.00 am to begin a citywide festive procession along Nevsky Prospekt from the Kazan Cathedral to the Alexander Nevsky square. At 12.00 – a small procession with the relics of Alexander Nevsky of the Holy Trinity Cathedral of the Lavra to the square of Alexander Nevsky.

Then hold festive events at the square of Alexander Nevsky: prayer, laying flowers to the monument of the Prince the greetings and congratulations of the officials, honoring veterans of the great Patriotic war – the knights of the order of Alexander Nevsky, the parade of guard of honor and cadets of military schools of St. Petersburg.

Twelfth day of September 1724, the founder of the Northern capital of the Emperor Peter I personally moved in he established a monastery relics of the Holy Prince Alexander Nevsky, resting until then in Vladimir. So the city on the Neva river acquired its patron Saint and protector, and the day on 12 September was in St. Petersburg of a special occasion.

In 1743 the Empress Elizabeth Petrovna instituted a city-wide celebratory procession in day of the relics of Alexander Nevsky. The tradition of the procession along the Nevsky prospect on September 12, interrupted in the years of Soviet power was renewed during the main celebrations of the 300th anniversary of Alexander Nevsky Lavra in 2013.
