Retain steadfastness: the EU does not recognize elections in Crimea and Sevastopol

The European Union stated that it did not recognize held the tenth of September elections on the territory of the Crimean Peninsula, said in a statement on the official website of the European external action service.

A single day of voting

Tenth of September in 82 regions of the Russian Federation held elections of different levels. In particular, in Sevastopol was elected Governor of the city, which was Dmitry Ovsyannikov, who scored 71,05% of the vote. In addition, in the Crimea held elections to the national Parliament.

The Ukrainian foreign Ministry expressed protest over the election in Crimea.

«We Express our strong protest in connection with the «election process» in the occupied Crimea… a Gross violation of the Russian Federation of international law and the laws of Ukraine», — wrote the official representative of the Ukrainian diplomatic corps Marian Betz on Twitter.

However, the Crimean authorities did not take seriously the protest of the Ukraine.

«This is their usual position, they also need something to say, so they say that the world does not recognize, although this is absolutely not true. In the last elections to the state Duma in Crimea, there appeared the representatives who work there are positive aspects of their work. For us the most important thing that these elections recognized by the whole country, and what they say is a state of mind», — said the head of the election Commission of Crimea Mikhail Malyshev.

Position Of The European Union

The EU officially stated that it does not recognize the elections at various levels held on the Peninsula in the framework of the single voting day in Russia.

«Gubernatorial elections were held in Sevastopol. The European Union has not recognized the illegal annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol to the Russian Federation and therefore do not recognize the elections in the Crimean Peninsula», — stated in the message of the European external action service.

In addition, the EU reiterated the variability of its position on the Crimean issue.

«Anyone who was elected on the Crimean Peninsula and said that Crimea and Sevastopol, will not be recognized as representative of those areas that are Ukrainian. The EU remains unwavering in its support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine», — added in the European foreign service.

Crimea joined the Russian Federation following the results of a referendum held in 2014 after the coup in Ukraine. For reunification with Russia voted more than 95% of the inhabitants of the Peninsula. However, the Ukrainian authorities do not agree with the outcome of the referendum and declare that the Peninsula is «temporarily occupied territory», but said the Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Crimea issue «is closed permanently.»
