The arrest of film Director Kirill Serebrennikov has nothing to do with politics, and criticism on the part of France against Russia in connection with this case does not affect the development of Russian-French cultural ties, said the Minister of culture Vladimir Medinsky in an interview to the French newspaper Figaro.

Earlier, foreign Minister of France Jean-Yves Le Drian after a meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov said that Paris is concerned about the situation with the arrest of film Director Kirill Serebrennikov and considers it a violation of freedom of creativity.

«France, like Russia is a free country, people can Express their opinion on any subject. This does not affect the development of our cultural ties. Arrest Serebrennikov has nothing to do with politics and concerns the disposal of state funds by the company under the leadership of this Director,» — said the Minister.

Medina added that concerns about the «revival of Stalinist repression» are groundless, and to compare the arrest of the Director Vsevolod Meyerhold in 1936 with the case Serebrennikov incorrect. «These comparisons are flawed. Meyerhold was arrested for political reasons and executed. And Serebrennikov was placed under house arrest for economic reasons», — explained the Minister.

The Director Kirill Serebrennikov, the ex-accountant of the «Seventh Studio» Nina Masliaev, the General Director «the Seventh Studio» Yuri Itin and Malopolski are defendants in the case of fraud with public funds. In may at the Metropolitan theater «Gogol-center» and home Serebrennikov were searched in the case of embezzlement of public funds to non-profit organizations, «the Seventh Studio».

According to the investigation, the Ministry of culture of Russia has allocated the «Seventh Studio» about 70 million rubles for shows and tours. The defendants, according to the investigation, stole money by bogus documents about the organization of the play «a Midsummer night’s Dream».
