Turkish Minister for EU Affairs ömer çelik said that Turkey offered to hold a summit with the European Union to achieve progress in the accession process to the EU and to strengthen relations between his country and unit, reports Reuters.

«Turkey has not abandoned its goal to become a full member of the EU: we are ready to find solutions to move forward,» said çelik.

The Turkish Minister believes that the EU is not United in its approach to Turkey’s admission to the bloc. Actively promoting the position of the European Commissioner for enlargement and neighbourhood policy Johannes Hahn, who seeks to slow down the entry of Ankara, he added.

As noted çelik, Ankara «disappointed in Merkel and some other» European politicians, as «one of the hardest moments of its history, Turkey has been abandoned by friends and allies.»

«The EU has a real problem — we don’t know what will come from the UK, they are unable to cope with illegal migration, there are weaknesses in the capacities of the EU to combat terrorism, and there is an urgent need for reforms. But they lay it all aside and build antagonism with Turkey to cover up their vital internal problems», — the Minister added.

On Wednesday, the head of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker has ruled out Turkey’s membership in the EU in the foreseeable future.

The relationship between the EU and Turkey deteriorated after the attempted armed coup in the country in 2016: the European Union criticized the reaction of the Turkish authorities, mass arrests and other measures Ankara has suspended preparations for the opening of new chapters of the negotiation file on the accession of Turkey to the European Union.
