NATO has stepped up surveillance for the development of DPRK’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles, and the situation in the region, told RIA Novosti Secretary General of the Alliance Jens Stoltenberg.

«We have intensified the analysis, monitoring the situation in the region, with the development of nuclear weapons and missiles in North Korea. We strengthen cooperation with partners in the region, especially with South Korea and Japan», — said Stoltenberg.

He recalled that in recent months, NATO held several meetings with the partners dealing with this issue.

«I will visit the region in October, I will be in Japan and South Korea. Our experts also discussed the issues related to ballistic missile defense,» — said Stoltenberg.

The DPRK said on September 3 about the successful test of a hydrogen warhead, which is designed to equip Intercontinental ballistic missiles. The military of Japan and South Korea have previously estimated the power of the tested charge 120 to 160 kilotons, several times the power of the atomic bombs dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. It was the sixth nuclear test by Pyongyang. The week before the DPRK tested a ballistic missile that flew over Japan.

The UN Security Council in response to the unanimously imposed new sanctions against the DPRK, which will significantly limit the export and import capabilities of Pyongyang. Resolution 2375 set the most stringent UN sanctions regime in the twenty-first century.
