Putin and Lebanese Prime Minister Hariri discussed cooperation in the military sphere

The Prime Minister of Lebanon Saad Hariri said that the talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the development of bilateral relations on a range of issues, particularly in the military sphere.

«We discussed bilateral issues, particularly economic. Yesterday we had a discussion with Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev on the theme of economic cooperation. In addition, we (Putin – ed.) discussed military aid to Lebanon, and how we could develop these relations,» said Hariri to reporters.

Speaking about military-technical cooperation between Moscow and Beirut, Hariri announced his plans to strengthen the Lebanese armed forces and security forces. «We had a long conversation about this topic (MTC – ed.) with President Putin, and I think that these relations between the two countries are good,» he said.

The Prime Minister expressed hope that Russian companies will be actively involved in commercial projects in Lebanon. «There are companies engaged in the gas sector. There are real opportunities to achieve success in this project, and we call on Russian companies to come to Lebanon,» said Hariri.

According to Hariri, the parties also discussed a number of regional issues, the situation in the middle East. Not ignored and Syria and the Lebanese Prime Minister in this regard said that he and Putin pointed to the importance of the stabilization of the situation in Syria through the zone of de-escalation. «When a political settlement in Syria ends and Lebanon can become a platform for reconstruction of Syria,» — said the Prime Minister.

Earlier, the Lebanese Ambassador to Russia Shawki Bou Nassar, said that Beirut is interested in supplies of Russian weapons, at the expert level there is a study of the supply of anti-tank missile complexes «cornet» and T-72 tanks. According to him, Lebanon was hoping to get the weapons in 2016.

Later, in January 2017, the Minister of Lebanese President Pierre Raffoul confirmed to RIA Novosti that Beirut hopes to intensify in the near future, projects worth over half a billion dollars on Russian arms supplies.
