Dredging occurs in harbour basins, which are already usually heavily contaminated, so the procedure does not bring any environmental damage, told RIA Novosti Deputy Chairman of the southern scientific center of Russian Academy of science, candidate of biological Sciences Oleg Stepanyan.

On Thursday appeared information that the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine instructed to send the dredging equipment from the Black sea to Azov for work in ports. Earlier in the Ministry of infrastructure of Ukraine said about the necessity of immediate holding of these works in the ports of Mariupol and Berdyansk on the Azov sea to maintain navigation of the dimensions of the ports.

«The very port area — a priori technological object, that is, to talk about any kind of damage to resources as a result of dredging have reservations because it is usually already contaminated territory, which is actively used», — said Stepanyan RIA Novosti.

Deputy head of the don basin water management Natalia Kovtun reminded RIA Novosti that the environmental requirements must be respected.

«If the borders of neighboring States… and if it’s for navigation, always these works were carried out. Ports are also not there yesterday,» said Kovtun, adding that from the Russian Federation of works on clearing of channels to maintain and operate shipping routes in the sea of Azov are held annually.

«We don’t know what volume of work will be performed, therefore we can not specifically answer, how will it affect us or not,» she said. He added, however, that during such work account should be taken of environmental requirements.
